A tea planter's house, kept as a home
Ferngrove was built in 1934 for a planter's family and their staff. We bought it in 2011 with the garden gone wild and the roof half open to the sky.
Two years of work later, it opened as a nine-room retreat. We kept the bones — the timber floors, the deep verandah, the stone hearth — and added the things a highland night actually needs: underfloor heating, thick curtains, proper duvets.
It is still a small operation. One of us is usually on the desk, the kitchen cooks one highland menu a night, and the garden supplies the breakfast table when it can. Guests tend to end up in the lounge by the fire, comparing trail notes.
We are ten minutes from Tanah Rata, a short drive from the BOH estate and the Mossy Forest, and far enough up the lane that the only sound after dark is the rain on the leaves.

Booked two nights, stayed four
We came for a weekend and left on Tuesday. The room was warm, the scones were unreal, and the walk they sent us on had the whole Mossy Forest to ourselves. It is the small-place feeling you cannot fake.
