Our story
We bought a wreck on Muntri Street and stayed
In 2014 the house at No. 48 had a tree growing through the back wall and a roof that was mostly sky. It also had its original five-window front, a full air-well, and cement tiles under sixty years of lino.
We spent two years on it with a heritage architect and a crew of older tradesmen who still know lime plaster and Senggarang tiles. Nothing structural moved. The rooms are the rooms the family lived in, with the walls where they left them.
It opened in 2016 with eighteen rooms, a coffee bar in the courtyard and a small roof terrace. It has stayed that size. One of us is usually at the front desk, and the kitchen still cooks around what the market had that morning.
We are two minutes from the Chulia Street hawkers, inside the UNESCO core zone, and close enough to the jetties that the first sound after dark is the ferry horn.
